An example that comes to mind is Portal - by pretty much all metrics, Portal 2 is a more fleshed out and simply better game than the original, but because you are already familiar with the world and its most significant inhabitants, the level of whimsical mystery in the original could never quite be reached again. But in a sequel everything has to relate to the already existing world. When interacting with a game world for the first time, you have to piece together just what the world that you were thrown into is like, which to me is what really makes Control one of the all time greats. Yeah, I would expect that the same kind of wonder that I experienced playing Control for the first time is impossible to repeat, simply because the foundation (heh) of the worldbuilding is already done.
